Academic Program
1. French Language and Literature Department
This Department allows students who are interested in teaching French language and literature to pursue a simultaneous course in these two domains. It comes within the efforts of Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) to promote French as a language of teaching, communication, and culture. The French-speaking communities are an integral part of the Lebanese patrimony and constitute a factor for progress in the future within the framework of an ancient tradition of cultural and, more precisely, literary exchange.

In collaboration with the University of "Paris III"- New Sorbonne, Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) has established within its Faculty of Letters a French Language and Literature Department, which prepares its students for the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Ph.D. degrees in French Language and Literature.

The convention between Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) and the University of "Paris III"-New Sorbonne stipulates that the diplomas should have the seal of both universities, along with the rights that accompany this title in Lebanon, France, and Europe. According to this convention, the Department's programs are conceived in close collaboration between the two universities. Moreover, the diplomas are accredited by the Lebanese State.

Thus, this course is of a very high level and essentially a preparation for the professions of teacher and researcher of French language and literature. It constitutes an indispensable basis for other professional choices that require perfect competence in the French language and a knowledge of French literature

Objectives
The Department of French Language and Literature has the following aims:
  • To train teachers of French language and literature for junior and senior high school.
  • To train researchers in French literature and linguistics.
  • To prepare students for the various professions requiring mastery of French language and culture, such as literary criticism, journalism, editing and work in the media.

  • Scientific research in French literature, civilization and linguistics, oriental languages and civilizations, western languages and civilizations, and general and comparative literature.

2. English Language and Literature Department
The Department of English Language and Literature (DELL) offers students, through its English language curriculum, the opportunity to acquire communicative competence in English, and to enhance their appreciation of the significance of English in human affairs in the world today, and in cultural exchanges and trade between Lebanon and the Anglophone world. Also, the DELL promotes, through its English literature curriculum, a greater understanding of the Anglo-American culture, and the role it plays in the evolution the evolution of history.

The DELL is accredited by the Lebanese State. It offers a variety of programs leading to Bachelor of Arts (Licence), Teaching Licence (Licence d'Enseignement), Master of Arts (DEA), and Ph.D. degrees in English Language and Literature.

Objectives
The general objectives of the DELL are the following:
  • To prepare students for teaching English language and literature in schools and universities, as well as for work in related fields which require English language skills.
  • To enable students to prepare for service and leadership in professions or vocations requiring advanced training and research in English language and literature.
  • To prepare students for national and international careers with the necessary English language skills (editorial positions, public relations, analysts, social workers, etc.)
  • To serve as a research center for English language and literature.

Degrees Offered
The DELL offers the following degrees:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) (three years)
  • Teaching Licence (TL) (one year after completion of BA)
  • Master of Arts (MA) (one year after completion of TL)
  • Ph.D. (three years at least after completion of MA)

3. Arabic Language and Literature Department
This Department enables students who are interested in teaching Arabic and Arabic literature to pursue a simultaneous course in these two domains.

It comes within the framework of Holy Spirit University's efforts to promote the mother language as one of teaching, communication, and culture.

The Arabic Language and Literature Department prepares its students for the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Ph.D. degrees in Arabic Language and Literature.
Hence, this course is of a very high level, being essentially a preparation for the professions of teacher and researcher of Arabic language and literature. It constitutes an indispensable basis for other professional choices that require perfect competence in the Arabic language and a knowledge of Arabic literature.

Objectives and prospects
The Arabic Language and Literature Department aims at:
  • Training Arabic language and literature teachers for secondary and higher teaching.
  • Training researchers in Arabic literature and linguistics.
  • Preparing its students for different professions that require a perfect competence in the Arabic language and a deep knowledge of Arabic culture: literary criticism, journalism, publishing, media, etc.
4. Interpretation and Translation Department
The Interpretation and Translation Department (DIT) is a part of the Faculty of Letters at Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) and incorporates the Center of Foreign Living Languages (French - English - German - Italian - Spanish) that was established in 1970.

This Department enables its students to fulfill a vocation unique to their country and to promote communication between people. Indeed, the deep knowledge and practice of three living languages (Arabic, French, and English) as well as the art of translating and interpreting any one of them into another gives the students great professional advantages and offers Lebanon, which is located at the crossroads of East and West, a healthy multilingualism in addition to an ability to initiate, assimilate and establish dialogue, thus enriching it on the economic, sociopolitical, cultural, and many other levels...

Objectives
The DIT has the following aims:
  • To encourage an enriching multilingualism in conformity with the history and the cultural situation of Lebanon and with its interests and its destiny in the world.
  • To give practical training in written and oral translation; to teach the principles of translation expertise; to provide a systematic education allowing students to approach any text with all the means at the disposal of the professional translator; to be instructed in the professional practice of written and sight translation in the various domains of literature, technical science, economics, politics, law, editing, finance, agriculture, medicine, architecture, geography, history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, tourism, etc.
  • To award Diplomas of Interpretation and Translation required for the various professions; and to prepare candidates for the competitive examinations of various international organizations and ministries.

    • 5. Department of Applied Modern Languages – Option: Business and Trade
      The Applied Living Languages (LVA) Department is affiliated to the Translation and Interpretation Department (DIT) as an alternative option (the first two years being a common-core syllabus for both).
      This Department allows its students to master three living languages (Arabic, French, and English) and to apply them within the financial, economic, commercial, and legal domains in countries where their use is indispensable.

      The contents of this Department's programs have been conceived in partnership with the Living Languages (LVA) Department of the University of "Paris III"- New Sorbonne.
      The course leads to a University Degree after three university years and a Bachelor of Arts at the end of the fourth year.

      The Department of Applied Living Languages (DLVA/DALL) prepares students for:
      • the Bachelor of Arts in Applied Living Languages - Option Business and Commerce (3 years).
      • the Master's (Teaching License) in Applied Living Languages - Option Business and Commerce (1 year after the Bachelor degree).

      Objectives

      The aim of the Department of Applied Living Languages is to prepare students for careers in trilingual communication and to provide them with professional abilities that can be used directly in business enterprises and in national and international public and private organizations.
      It is intended for students who have a good mastery of Arabic and of two living languages, in particular French and English, and who wish to acquire a general education directed towards the economy and the world of business, where the ability to use several languages is now indispensable.
      The purpose of the teaching is to train multilingual operators with an up-to-date knowledge of financial management, of rules and their juridical basis, and of the general context of the entrepreneurial world.
      These studies require the student to be able to use Arabic, French and English without difficulty, in writing as well as orally. They demand perseverance and require time spent in the countries where these languages are in current use.

      The program of this department has been planned in accordance with the equivalant department (LEA- Langues Etrangères appliquées) of Paris II - New Sorbonne.

      6. Department of Journalism and Communication
      Communication has nowadays become an essential tool which is based on the multiplicity and omnipresence of media. This is to such an extent that, without communication, authority has no impact whatsoever, whether talking about political authority or the institutional authority inside a company. The press, which was considered as the fourth authority in democratic regimes, has now moved to the forefront, outshining the executive and legislative authorities and, sometimes, even the judicial one.

      Journalism students develop during their curriculum, in addition to methodological and scientific abilities, practical and technical skills in editing and recording studios. The latter are put at their disposal by the Audio-Visual department. The department of Journalism and Communication within the Faculty of Letters in the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik is, therefore, training professionals in the fields of communication and journalism, who are well able to work in various domains related to communication and journalism.

      Diplomas
      • Bachelor Degree in Journalism and Communication: 96 credits
        Students registered for a Bachelor degree in Journalism and Communication have to follow training in every one of the three years of their major: the first one in written press, the second in audio-visual (radio, television, multimedia) and the third in one of the specialization fields chosen by the student.
      • Master’s in Journalism and Communication: 24 credits

      Job Markets

      Young professionals, having followed a career in Journalism and Communication, are writing professionals who are capable of opening a constructed conversation, of having a proof-supported stance and of conceiving and putting forth projects in various domains and professional subjects, ranging from enterprise communication and institutional communication to diversified domains and journalistic genres (written press, radio-journalism, JRI…)
