Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities
Overview
The Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences, founded in 1949 by the Lebanese Maronite Order, strives to promote a university education which responds to the requirements of its milieu. It addresses a public curious about human phenomena, and makes ready the socio-political and cultural management of human resources.
Since its foundation, the Faculty has continued to develop. It confers all university grades approved by the Lebanese Republic in the fields of Philosophy, Social Sciences, Clinical and Practical Psychology and the Educational Sciences: Teaching, Education Management and Education Technology.

Its fundamental charter: the practice of full intellectual freedom. Its conscious and organized educational activity is based on the famous Kant citation: “Man can never become a man without education.”

Preamble
Due to the importance and speed of the changes that we are witnessing, and taking into account the relative recommendations of the important commissions and conferences concerned with tertiary education including, among others, the International Commission on Education for the 21st Century, and the World Conference on Tertiary Education in the 21st century,…and being convinced that education is, more than ever, the seed of societies founded on knowledge, the Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences is reviewing its program in order to meet with the international vision of tertiary education.

In this context the Faculty suggested a significant education based on competence, an optimal range of choices, a flexible mechanism of aims and system endings, which allows the students local, regional and international mobility. Thus, the framework of education offers a university path based on three grades:

Bachelor Degree (or BA), Masters (or MA), Doctorate (or PhD), known more commonly as Bac 3+5+8. In other terms, the University cycles are distributed as follows:
  • 1st cycle: Bachelor Degree (3 years)
  • 2nd cycle: Masters (MA) (2 years)
  • 3rd cycle: Doctorate (3 years)

This change aims at adapting the choice of education to the international process, setting it within in a logic of cooperation and enrichment, and at the service of society.

Most of the programs offer, in addition to the formation in the chosen discipline, 15 credits giving an added value to the students’ education by targeting one or many objectives:
  • Allow the acquisition of professional competence
  • Facilitate access to Masters that don’t correspond to the program chosen in the first cycle
  • Deepen a knowledge close to the major
  • Develop general knowledge and favor opening

Culture
Culture isn’t just a “pastime”, a “plus” after courses; it is rather part of the students’ education and lives. In this framework, the Faculty receives annually, foreign teachers coming from Europe, Canada, the United States, Morocco and Arab countries, in order to participate in the colloquiums, symposiums as well as seminars that contribute to the cultural and artistic improvement of the university community.
The culture’s passport is also manifested in the general formation that offers an array of transverse courses likely to ensure all students a multidimensional education in addition to their specialization so that the latter remains abreast of the social, technological, scientific and artistic mutations.
