On May 16, 2012, the Faculty of Sciences at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), in collaboration with the Union of Municipalities of Keserwan - Ftouh, organized the 2nd Scientific Day.

Following the Lebanese National Anthem and the opening speech by Dr. Faten El Hage, Academic Secretary of the Faculty of Sciences, Dr. Badih Baz, Dean of the Faculty, thanked the students and the professors for their scientific research, encouraging them “… for further active participation for the establishment of a better Lebanese society able to face the biggest challenges and keep pace with the latest scientific and technological changes in the world”. He considered that academic correlation from one side, and socio-economic from the other side, certainly leads to development in terms of careers and professions, and proves to be beneficial “… to the future generations who should be provided with job opportunities that are suitable for them, for their culture and for their country”.

In his speech, Mr. Nouhad Nawfal, Head of the Union of Municipalities of Keserwan – Ftouh pointed out that “… we are living amidst an area dangerously polluted because of the Zouk electricity plants and the lethal poison that they spread… You are inhaling this black smoke every day and therefore you become subject to intoxication and dangerous diseases. We always receive reports of environmental experts and officials wherein they mention the damages caused by such smoke to the children’s lungs and eyes, and may sometimes lead to cancerous diseases”. At the end of his speech, Mr. Noufal reiterated the importance of cooperation between the University and local authorities since it would bring mutual benefits for both parties.

A reception followed the inauguration ceremony wherein the students presented their research projects.
