“Political Crises in Lebanon”

The Higher Institute of Political and Administrative Sciences at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) organized on May 26, 2011 a conference on the theme of “Political Crises in Lebanon”, given by MP Georges Adwan, Vice-President of the executive committee of the Lebanese Forces.

Following the welcome speech by Dr. Georges Yahchouchi, Director of the Higher Institute of Political and Administrative Sciences, Adwan inaugurated his conference with an objective approach regarding the political crises that marked the history of Lebanon between May 24, 2000 and May 24, 2011, going through the main events that took place within this period: from the Israeli withdrawal and the liberation of south Lebanon in May 24, 2000, the assassination of the Prime Minister Rafic Hariri in February 14, 2005, the shaping of the March 8 and March 14 coalitions, to the war of July, the infamous May 7 incidents, the Doha conference, the parliamentary elections in 2009, etc… Adwan then discussed the different dimensions of the current crisis, indicating that the core of the problem resides mainly in overcoming the Constitution. He also underlined that in order to establish a just and healthy State, Lebanon should be able to take all decisions by itself without any kind of interfering, stressing that the government should be the only reference in all decisions and relations with the international community represent a source of strength.

Adwan concluded his conference by reiterating that a State cannot be formed in the presence of weapons beyond its authority and that consensual democracy cannot succeed, especially in the presence of sectarian alliances, unless with an electoral law based on relativity which favors the plurality of parties and advocates cooperation between a majority that governs and a minority that objects”.
