Call for papers - 50 YEARS AFTER MAY 68 Heritage and perspectives

Topic

2018 is, inter alia, the jubilee year of May 1968, a period that witnessed major protests in France, aiming at implementing reforms on the social, cultural, political, economic, artistic, ideological and religious levels.

The poster of May 68 displays the slogan “The beginning of a prolonged struggle”. We could therefore ask ourselves about the temporal and spatial extent of this revolutionary movement initiated by the Parisian student youth, that has marked more than one domain and whose pivotal ambition was to contribute to the development of the postmodern society.

Where did this ambition reach? Do our current societies meet the ideals set by this movement? What did we inherit? What have we endorsed and consolidated? And what have we abandoned? Where do the passionate and influential shouts stand today: Everyone is free to be free; Imagination takes power; Be realistic, ask the impossible; The boss needs you, you do not need him; Elections, a trap for idiots; Your happiness is being sold, steal it; etc.?

In order to answer these questions among others, or maybe to think about them aloud, the Faculty of Letters of the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) organizes on Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th of May 2018, an international and multidisciplinary symposium. This scientific event will commemorate the 50th anniversary of May 1968 and will bring together reflections on what have been inherited from the said movement. It will therefore shed light on the positive and negative repercussions, and on our current position in the world, in the light of the reforms called for at the time and of which some had been realized.
