In this volume of its theater series, the Phoenix Center for Lebanese Studies publishes four rare plays in Lebanese zajal, or colloquial poetry, by William Saab, educator, poet, and journalist. Al-Ajniha Al-Moutakassira, or “The Broken Wings”, adapted from Gibran Khalil Gibran’s famous eponymous work, was written in 1935.

Istiqlal Souria, or ”The Independence of Syria”, written in 1936, speaks of the struggle of a group of Syrian politicians against the French and of their negotiations for independence. The third play, entitled Ali Bek al-Assaad, also written in 1936, tells the story of a southern man from a renowned political dynasty. `Ours Loubnan, or “The Wedding of Lebanon”, written in 1943, tackles the efforts of the heroes of Lebanon’s Independence and includes many folk poetry and melodies. The purpose behind the publication of these works is to preserve them and make them available to readers and researchers.
