The aim of this center is the conservation of written heritage. It deals mainly with manuscript collections and archive documents from the convents of the OLM in addition to others relating to the Lebanese and Maronite heritage. The center team currently consists of five persons whose role is to :
Fill in standard technical forms describing the different parts of a manuscript
- Determine the different types of paper
- Determine the causes of deterioration
- Clean the manuscripts mechanically
- Cleaning and bookbinding
- Determine the type of ink used
- Evaluate the state of each handled object.
The center makes three kinds of boxes for conservation :
- Portfolios for a fine or unbound codex
- Cardboard boxes for a codex in good condition
- Hard boxes for big formats or a heavily damaged codex
- The center will soon be able to treat documents with chemicals thanks to the installation of an extractor hood for toxic fumes
- The center has so far conditioned 520 manuscripts
