Policy for the use of Electronic Resources

Contractual license agreements and copyright laws govern the use of USEK Library’s electronic resources. Access is limited to USEK members and other authorized users physically present on the University premises.

The licensed databases at USEK Library are for research, scholarly, or instructional purposes by current USEK faculty, staff, students and other authorized users.

Unauthorized access by non-USEK users is prohibited. Making online content available to unauthorized users is prohibited.
Library users must limit their use of electronic resources to non-commercial, educational or personal research purposes.

Users must not systematically download, distribute or retain substantial portions of the licensed content. Systematic downloading or printing of entire journal issues or volumes, or large portions of other e-resources is prohibited.

Users must delete any copies of confidential data they have saved when they no longer need it.
Please refer to the following section for a more detailed list of permitted and prohibited actions.

Generally Permitted
  • Users can view, download, copy, print and save a copy of search results;
  • Users can view, download, copy, print and save individual articles;
  • Users can use e-resources for non-commercial, scholarly, educational or scientific research, teaching, private study and clinical purposes only;
  • Users can share or send a copy of an article, book chapter or other electronic item to another authorized user (i.e. current faculty, students, staff…);
  • Users can post a permanent URL link to the publisher's version of the article, book chapter, or other electronic item on the e-learning platform (publisher links will allow only authorized users access).

Note: Users may only make limited printed or electronic copies.

Generally Prohibited
  • Users must not share passwords;
  • Users must not share content with unauthorized users;
  • Users must not use e-resources for commercial gain (i.e. reselling, redistributing or republishing licensed content);
  • Users must not systematically print, copy or download content such as entire issues of electronic journals and sequential chapters in online books.
  • Any attempt to create large databases from bibliographic files is detectable by information providers, and may result in loss of that information service to the relevant computer addresses or the entire USEK community;
  • Users must not post copyrighted content or articles to publicly accessible websites;
  • Users must not use robots, crawlers or similar software applications for systematic, bulk or automatic downloading;
  • Users must not modify, alter, or create derivative works.

Contractual license agreements made between USEK Library and publishers govern the access, use, and reproduction of these resources. Providers of these resources routinely monitor database activity to detect violations and violators.

Any breaches of those agreements could result in the loss of access to the resources for the entire USEK community, and prosecution of the user by the product sellers.

Users in violation may also have their library privileges terminated and be disciplined by the University for misconduct.
